Rising above the town of Darjeeling, Tiger Hill is world-renowned for its breathtaking panoramic views of the Eastern Himalayas. Standing at an altitude of approximately 2,590 meters, it serves as the ultimate vantage point to witness the sunrise over Mount Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak. On exceptionally clear days, even the distant silhouette of Mount Everest is visible. The site is a primary attraction for nature lovers and photographers, offering a serene environment to appreciate the majestic, snow-capped mountain ranges.
Upon arriving at NJP Station or Bagdogra Airport, the group will begin the scenic climb to Darjeeling (7,000 ft). This journey serves as an introduction to the changing vegetation zones of the Eastern Himalayas. After checking in, students will head to the Chowrasta (The Mall) for a guided heritage walk. This session focuses on the town’s history as a major British administrative hub and its unique urban planning on a ridge.
The morning is dedicated to the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, India’s highest altitude zoo. Students will observe specialized conservation programs for endangered species like the Red Panda and Snow Leopard. This is followed by a visit to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), where students explore a world-class museum showcasing the physics and history of Everest expeditions, including the equipment used by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary.
The day begins with a pre-dawn excursion to Tiger Hill to observe the sunrise over the Kanchenjunga and Everest ranges, providing a practical lesson on mountain geography and peaks. On the way back, the group visits the Batasia Loop, a masterpiece of railway engineering. The afternoon is spent at a Heritage Tea Estate, where students take a factory tour to learn about the botanical classification of tea and the chemical processes of oxidation and fermentation required to produce "Darjeeling Gold."
Before descending, students visit the Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre to observe traditional Himalayan handicrafts and discuss the socio-economic history of the region’s migrant communities. The trip concludes with a final group assembly to discuss the key learnings of the tour before transferring back to the plains (NJP/Bagdogra) for their return journey.
